A MAN was charged with murder tonight after a woman who was "loved by all" was fatally shot in a quiet village.

Carrie Slater, 37, was rushed to hospital on Thursday evening after being wounded in Long Clawson, near Melton Mowbray, Leics.

She died on Saturday evening, and a post-mortem examination established it was as a result of a gunshot wound.

Her family released an emotional statement saying: “Carrie was loved by all of us.

“She was a daughter and beloved sister to her siblings.

“We’re still coming to terms with what happened.

“It’s difficult to put into words how we’re feeling but nothing we say is going to bring her back.

“She grew up in Grantham and we know there are people there who will be devasted to learn that she’s no longer with us.

“We’re supporting one another as we grieve and ask for privacy at this time.”

Richard Basson, of Long Clawson, has been charged with her murder.

He was also charged with possession of a prohibited firearm, and possession of ammunition without a certificate.

He is due to appear at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The shooting came a day after another alleged murder close by.

A 69-year-old woman was arrested after a man was found dead at a home in Melton Mowbray.

An ambulance crew discovered the unresponsive man in a house at around 11.50pm on Wednesday night, and called police.

The pensioner, who was at the address, was then arrested on suspicion of murder.
