WINSTON REID admits West Ham just didn't try hard enough in their 3-0 home thumping by Southampton.

And as Hammers legend Tony Cottee slammed players for not pulling their weight, Opta stats prove Kiwi defender Reid is right.

The Hammers have now suffered their worst start to the season since 2002 after slumping to a fifth loss in six Prem matches.

And the writing could be on the Olympic Stadium wall - they went down that season.

Defensive shockers led to the defeat and thousands of empty seats by the time the full-time whistle sounded in Stratford.

And Reid, who was the culprit for Dusan Tadic's goal after giving the ball away in midfield, confessed his side just did not put a shift in - with stats proving they ran the third lowest distance of any Prem team over the weekend.

Reid explained: "When you lose you, you can always do more.

"We've played against good teams so far and we need to work a lot harder to get a bit of luck on our side.

"You could see out there that they worked harder than us, and they got a good result.

"To get our confidence back, we need to work hard. We need to dig deep and work a lot harder.

"We're six games in and we've only got three points, so we need to dig deeper, produce a better performance and get a win."

Some fans have questioned boss Slaven Bilic - whose odds of being axed have tumbled - but club legend Tony Cottee, who made 282 Hammers appearances, insists the players are to blame.

He slammed the club's new signings, claiming that the Hammers may need to buy British players who know what it means to play for the club.

Cottee told Sky Sports: "I don't think we've got long enough to discuss what's going wrong at the club - it's pretty much a full house at the moment.

"I feel a bit sorry for Slaven Bilic. You look at the start they had last year and it's completely different this year.

"But the players have got to take responsbility. You can't keep blaming the manager and the move to the new stadium.

"It's the players on the pitch. I know there have been new players that have come into the club - which I might add I don't think are going to be good enough for the club.

"But they've got to get their heads together and work out a formation and a system that suits them and get the right players in and perhaps get a few more British players in there.

"Do they understand what it means to play for the club?

"You saw the fans yesterday. There was hardly anyone left at the end of the game and it doesn't look good for the club at the moment."
