A FEMALE restaurant boss has become embroiled in a sexism storm after she posted a jobs ad favouring blokes.
Angela Borsi, head chef at the Slug and Lettuce in Bristol, posted a chef job advert asking for “boys first” as it involved lifting heavy items.
The post for the £8-an-hour full time job provoked a backlash among women on the ‘Bristol and Surrounding Areas' Facebook group.
One labelled it the “the most sexist post I've seen today” while another asked if she was looking for a boyfriend instead of a chef.
But the head cook was quick to defend her actions saying the 40-45 hours jobs ad was "nothing bad."
She said: “I have two girls in the kitchen already, one is me and the other is pregnant and we need a man for the heavy lifting.
When we do an oil change, it is 20 litre containers and they are heavy.”
The weight of the oil drums meant the role was better suited for a bloke, the Slug and Lettuce employee added.
Under UK law, bosses are not allowed to discriminate on gender without a "genuine occupational requirement."
Guidance from the jobs agency, Reed states: "An employer cannot show a preference to hire someone of a particular gender without a genuine occupational requirement.
"Without one, any language in the job advert relating to gender preference could be viewed as discriminatory.”
It adds that even with “good intentions” favouring only men or women for a role is “generally not acceptable.”

A spokesman for the Slug and Lettuce said: "Whilst this individual is a team member she does not handle our recruitment.
"The post was done proactively on a personal feed in her own time and certainly does not reflect company policy.
"We would like to apologise for any offence caused and reassure all applicants that our management team handles all recruitment to ensure the correct procedures are adhered to and it will be no different with this vacancy."
