FISH and chips are one of Britain’s favourite comfort foods, enjoyed as a seaside treat or by families as a Friday night takeaway.
Millers Fish and Chips has been named the best chippy in the country at the 2018 National Fish & Chips Awards, beating 10,500 other food outlets. But who exactly are they?
Where is Millers Fish & Chips?
Millers in based in Haxby, Northern Yorkshire, and is run by Nick Miller and his father David.
The winners were crowned at a ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.
Upon winning, Nick said: "I can't believe we're the UK's best fish and chip shop. Words can't describe how this feels.”
The business owners beat 10,500 competing chippies to win the top accolade of the night.
How long has it been around?
Millers has been in the family for four generations and has a 77-year history.
The winning pair explained they mix tradition with innovation, saying: “We operate a separate frying area to cater for allergen-free diets and offer a range of gluten-free, halal and vegetarian products, all cooked using only the finest, locally-sourced, sustainable ingredients.”
Millers believe in keeping fish and chips accessible to all, selling a standard cod and chips dish for a very reasonable £6.

Burton Road Chippy in Lincoln won second place, while Harbourside Fish & Chips in Plymouth came in third.

How is it judged?
The National Fish & Chips awards competition was conducted by Seafish, the seafood authority that champions sustainability.
The competition is judged by taste tests and “mystery judging audits”.
Aside from the tasting, other aspects of the business that are taken into consideration include: shop appearance, raw materials, storage facilities, preparation areas, equipment and utensils, staff training, staff presentation and customer service, practices and techniques, packaging, marketing activity and sustainability policies.
CEO, Marcus Coleman, spoke about the 2018 winners, saying: "Millers Fish & Chips stood out from the beginning. With the combination of David's experience and Nick's modern approach, they are a team to be reckoned with and one of the industry's greatest double acts."
