A dad-of-two was stabbed to death outside an ice cream parlour in North London on Monday as the capital suffered its 66th murder this year.

The man, named locally as 20-year-old Marcel Campbell, was brutally knifed during a daylight attack in Islington.

Marcel, from nearby Tottenham, North London, was described as a "wonderful father" by grieving relatives.

Photographs show the emergency services battling to try and save his life but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His aunt, Lynette, told the Evening Standard: "He lived for his kids. He was a good boy, we are losing too many of our young people. His mother is devastated.”

In CCTV footage a man was seen sprinting away from the scene shortly after the attack.

While terrified families and shoppers are seen fleeing the scene of the attack, at 6.30pm on Monday evening, and a dad is seen pulling his young daughter to one side.

Moments later a man appears to run away from the scene. It is not known how he is connected with the incident, if at all.

Local business owner Gregory Barry said he saw the brutal stabbing unfold.

He said: "There were two blokes in a van, it pulled up on the street. It looked like there was an altercation and the fight carried on outside the van."

A Met Police spokesman said: "Road closures remain in place around the scene. There have been no arrests and enquiries into the attack continue."

Unconfirmed local reports claimed paramedics were seen performing CPR on the stabbing victim.

He is the 66th person to be murdered in the capital this year. Officers are now working to trace his next of kin.

Local resident William Potter wrote on Twitter: "Young guy stabbed and killed right outside my flat on Upper Street. Horrible thing to witness. Poor guy."

Islington councillor Paul Convery described the attack as "horrifying".

He tweeted: "Shocking incident on Upper Street right now outside Town Hall. Reported that man fatally stabbed."

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted: "I remain in close contact with @metpoliceuk, the local MP and Leader of the Council following a fatal stabbing in Islington this evening.

"This is being investigated by officers and my thoughts are with the victim's family."

Many residents were unable to access their homes on Upper Street, with the cordon extending from Barnsbury Street to Islington Park Road.

People were directed by police to nearby St Mary's church which was open for food and shelter overnight.

Police and forensic officers remain at the scene, scanning the road near to where the stabbing took place.

A tent remains over the spot where the incident happened, while at least eight emergency vehicles are in the cordon, including an ambulance.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said:  "We were called at 6:31pm today to Tyndale Lane, N1, to reports of a stabbing.

"We sent an incident response officer, a single responder in a car and an ambulance crew. London's Air Ambulance was also dispatched by air. Sadly, despite extensive efforts, a man died at the scene."

Police were called to reports of a stabbing in the Upper Green East area of Mitcham in London during the early hours of Sunday at 3.30am.

Paramedics from London Ambulance Service found Sri Lanka  Mr Thangarajah, 28,  with stab wounds, but were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Friday Osman Shidane, 20, died after being attacked in Victoria road in South Ruislip on Tuesday.

And on Thursday Abrahaman Juma was stabbed to death as ran away from his killers at around 11.30pm on Thursday in Barking.

Met Police records show 37,443 recorded knife offences and 6,694 recorded gun offences across the UK in the year up to September 2017.
