MICHAEL Gove announced new animal welfare laws in March 2018 that will see electric shock dog collars banned.

But what are the collars and do they make dogs more well behaved?

What is an electric shock dog collar?

The collars can deliver painful jolts continuously for 11 seconds.

They deliver electrical shocks of varying intensity via a radio-controlled electronic device incorporated into the collar.

The devices cause dogs to yelp, squeal, crouch and exhibit physiological signs of distress.

Despite being sold to improve the way dogs behave, they can worsen the animal's behaviour, The Dogs Trust charity said.

Will electric shock dog collars be banned?

Environment Secretary Michael Gove announced that selling the collars will be banned because they “can cause harm and suffering, whether intentionally or unintentionally, to our pets” on 28 August, 2018.

Wales has already banned them.

The Dogs Trust called the collars “unnecessary and cruel” and wants an immediate ban.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who has compared the shock collars to caning a child, is among the MPs and peers already pledging support.

Rachel Casey, director of canine behaviour and research at the Dogs Trust, said the charity was "appalled" that it was still legal to buy and use electric shock collars in England.

She said: "It is both unnecessary and cruel to resort to the use of these collars on dogs.

"This type of device is not only painful for a dog, it can have a serious negative impact on their mental and physical well-being.

"A dog can't understand when or why it's being shocked and this can cause it immense distress, with many dogs exhibiting signs of anxiety and worsened behaviour as a result."

She said positive methods such as using food rewards were the most effective and kindest way of training dogs.

On February 26, 2018, the Sun exclusively revealed that Michael Gove will announce that the collars are to be banned by the Government.

In March, 2018, Michael Gove said: “We are now proposing to ban the use of electric shock collars to improve the welfare of animals.”

What is a prong collar?

A prong collar is typically made of a metal chain material around a dog's neck.

Trainers use the collar to peform "corrections" to a dog's behaviour.

Dr Patty Khuly from Vet Street said: "Despite what your trainer or pet store employee may say, driving metal prongs into your dog’s neck hurts.

"Although eliciting pain may provide a quick fix, the effects are often short-lived."

There was previously a campaign to ban the devices, and the Government released a statement saying: "Dog owners should only use such devices after seeking professional advice. They should also ensure that they fully understand how these devices should be used and that they are used appropriately.

"Anyone using collars to inflict unnecessary suffering may be prosecuted under existing animal welfare laws."
