DRIVERS have been warned over Britain's most lucrative traffic cameras - each helping councils generate more than £1million a year from motoring fines.

Local authorities in cities including London, Manchester and Birmingham raked in huge funds from errors including driving in a bus lane and taking a wrong turn.

In South East London alone, a total of 43,108 fixed penalty notices were handed to motorists breaching rules in Dulwich Village, MailOnline reports.

The fines totted up to a huge £2.9m for the local council across the 2021/22 financial year.

And 65,000 fines were issued to drivers using the Moor Street scheme in Birmingham city centre's Bull Ring - the equivalent of £10,000 every day.

Meanwhile a single bus lane in Manchester's Oxford Street generated a further £1.7million in a year.

Penalty notices in London are typically £130, while outside the capital drivers can be charged up to £80 - though this is usually halved if paid within 14 days.

But councils have been accused of finding an excuse to "milk the motorist".

It comes after motorists slammed a "crazy" new rule that means they now need a permit to drive on 20-metre stretch of road - or face a £130 fine.

The "nightmare" scheme designed to cut traffic in Stoke Newington, north east London, is making people "drive further and pollute more".

Councils argue that the vast majority of drivers comply with their regulations without issue.

However, a Department for Transport source told MailOnline that councils should review roads where there are a "disproportionate number" of drivers being fined.
